As if my son’s induction ceremony for the NJHS wasn’t enough, today was the awards assemblies for both my 6th and 10th graders. My son received a medallion and certificate for academic excellence; he ranked magna cum laude. My sophomore daughter is ranked summa cum laude, and received academic excellence recognition for world history, Pre-AP biology and chemistry (she’s taking both now). I think I finally did something right.
Who would of thought 7 years ago, heck even last year, that this day would come. I think I’m more shocked then most. I’ve always known that my boy could do it but I didn’t think he had any plans to prove me right any time soon. I’m very excited that I underestimated his desire to become the boy I always knew he was. Out of the blue this year my son decided to that C’s, D’s, and F’s were no longer good enough. He decided this was the year to get serious about his grades because he does want to go to college. My son is only I. The 6th grade but his getting serious has meant no grades lower than a B on his report cards this year and all but one honor class. The class that isn’t honors would be science which is also coincidentally the same class he has a B in. Tonight he has also done something completely new, wonderful, and momentous for him. Tonight I sit on the bleachers in his school gym waiting for the ceremony to start. Tonight he gets inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. I’m as proud as any mother can be because he has come so far. I’m glad he’s experienced the bad and now appreciates all the good that’s coming from actually participating in and getting a good education.
Happy Mother’s Day! This is my mother (on the left) and my aunt, her older sister.
